Invisalign: Beautiful Straight Teeth Without the Metal

by admin on November 7th, 2013

Invisalign has become an increasingly popular alternative to conventional braces, as the orthodontic treatment straightens teeth without any cumbersome metal bands darkening your smile. Instead, the Invisalign system consists of a series of custom-made, clear aligners that gradually perfect your smile.

First, a consultation with an orthodontist who has received the proper Invisalign training will evaluate your needs and assess whether you are a good candidate for the system. Invisalign can address many issues ranging from the simple to those that are more complex, including overbite, underbite, crossbite and crooked, overly crowded, gapped or misaligned teeth.

As part of the treatment, x-rays, photos and impressions of your teeth will be used to create digital 3-D images of your teeth and bite. Based on these images, your orthodontist will be able to map out the exact movements your teeth will undergo in order to reach your desired results. Your doctor will then create a custom-made, clear aligner made of smooth, comfortable, BPA-free plastic that will start to slowly and gently shift your teeth.

As part of the treatment plan, you will switch out your aligners every 2 weeks, and meet with your doctor approximately every 6 to 8 weeks to review your progress. That way, your teeth will gradually improve and efficiently shift into place, while allowing you to remove the clear aligners when you eat or brush and floss your teeth.

Invisalign treatments typically take about a year, although it varies depending on the severity of the changes needed to perfect your smile. Wearing your Invisalign aligners for the recommended 20 to 22 hours per day throughout your entire treatment will ensure that your smile improves as easily and efficiently as possible.

Best of all, Invisalign’s design and texture make them virtually invisible when worn, so most people won’t even notice that you have them on. Their smooth surface won’t cut into or irritate your cheeks and gums like traditional metal or ceramic braces, and you can easily remove them whenever you want to eat or clean your teeth.
